The nurse who was ordered by the Egyptian orthopedic doctor, Amr Khairy, to bow to his dog has surfaced and narrated in several interviews what transpired when the doctor, along with two others, confronted him at "Al-Nozha International Hospital" in Cairo. The incident was described as a cocktail of psychological and emotional torture that the orthopedic doctor inflicted on him, claiming he had insulted his dog "Bobby" and made fun of it.
In a phone interview conducted by journalist Amr Adib on "MBC Egypt," where the nurse, Adel Salem, did not appear on screen, Salem confirmed that what was shown in the video actually happened. This was in response to Dr. Khairy's claims to local media that the end of the video was fabricated. He explained that the incident occurred six or seven months ago, stemming from the death of the doctor's dog, which the nurse was unaware of. Salem did not regard the death as significant, finding it surprising that the orthopedic doctor was so profoundly sad and in mourning over it. This angered the doctor, who subsequently acquired another dog, which the nurse also considered insignificant.
In the interview, which lasted over 10 minutes, he stated that he does not want any compensation and wishes to have the video removed due to the psychological harm it has caused him, his country, and the children involved. The journalist responded that he wants him to explain to his children that life's hardships must be faced, and they should understand that there are ruthless people at work, assuring him that the public prosecutor would ensure he received justice. However, the nurse, appearing reserved and reluctant to expand the issue, couldn’t hold back his emotions and cried, handing the phone to someone accompanying him during the interview.
That person was Ridwan Al-Bayati, the editor-in-chief of "Al-Jumhuriya" newspaper, who stated that the doctor's treatment of the nurse was an affront to the divine and to the country and to this simple man—all for a dog. Amr Adib agreed that the country is "turned upside down today, and he must get his rights," to which Al-Bayati concurred, and the interview concluded.
In a second interview that same Friday, Adel Salem appeared on screen wearing a mask covering part of his face. He stated that he is 55 years old and a father to educated children, including a daughter who is a lawyer. He reiterated his disbelief at the orthopedic doctor's extreme concern over the dog's death, adding a new detail that Dr. Amr Khairy had purchased the second dog for about 20,000 Egyptian pounds (approximately $1,275), a price that surprised the nurse.
He also expressed shock that the doctor was filming what was happening, mentioning he had not slept for a full day and felt embarrassed in front of his community and his children, as he resides in "Al-Qalij" village, known locally as "Al-Ilg," in Qalyubia Governorate. He even locked himself in his room because of the situation. He then sought advice from a lawyer at 4 a.m. the previous day, who stated in the video that what occurred is a crime against the divine and questioned how a prominent surgeon could make such a mistake, suggesting that God and the law would seek justice against the doctor.
Moreover, from the lawyer’s remarks, it is clear that the approximately 65,000 residents of "Al-Ilg" are very dissatisfied with the orthopedic doctor and what he has caused for the nurse. Thousands of Egyptians also expressed their anger and discontent in comments on the video. The lawyer insisted that with the budget of the entire United States, it would not be acceptable, calling for Dr. Amr Khairy to apologize and face legal punishment, while also urging the hospital to honor the nurse.
