Will France Continue to Support Lebanon?

The reporter Randa Taqieddine from "An-Nahar" mentioned yesterday that high-ranking French sources in Paris stated that the news published in Lebanon about the possibility of French President Emmanuel Macron visiting Lebanon is unfounded. They added that France continues to mobilize efforts to push Lebanese officials to undertake urgent reforms. Paris welcomed the timely conduct of elections but expressed regret over incidents and violations noted by the European Union monitoring committee during these elections, calling for the truth regarding what happened.

The sources indicated that the results of these elections, although held under challenging circumstances, reflected deep aspirations from the Lebanese people for change, as "Hezbollah" and its allies lost their majority, even though traditional parties remained. However, new forces emerged from the October 2019 revolution that managed to enter parliament.

These circles believe that the priority now is to appoint a prime minister without delay and to form a new government. They also see that, at this time, the authorities responsible for the interim administration must continue to take responsibility for implementing reforms based on the framework agreement signed with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), noting that this agreement is a first step towards a fundamental program for the IMF to revive the country amidst its ongoing severe crisis, where the dollar has reached 37,000 Lebanese pounds with continuously rising prices for gasoline and food, and the shutdown of the Deir Ammar power plant.

They emphasized that the Lebanese government's adoption of a recovery plan on May 20 was a positive act. In the absence of reforms, there will be no IMF program, which represents a condition for restoring confidence and structural support for Lebanon. This requires serious action from parliament and the rapid formation of a new government while mobilizing all Lebanese officials.

The sources confirmed that France continues to support Lebanon on the path to reforms and revival and will remain alongside the Lebanese people.
