Schools in New York State have announced a ban on costumes related to the popular Netflix series "Squid Game," in conjunction with Halloween celebrations. The schools cited that the South Korean production contains violent themes that are unsuitable for children.
In the United States, children are allowed to wear costumes to school on Halloween, which falls this year on the upcoming Sunday. Students in the Fayetteville-Manlius School District in northern New York, which includes six schools, three of which are elementary schools, have been prohibited from wearing outfits inspired by "Squid Game" due to "the violent messages it may convey," according to a statement from school principal Craig Tice shared with media outlets, including AFP.
The series depicts marginalized characters in South Korea participating in traditional children's games to win a large sum of money, but the losers of the games are killed off as the rounds progress, featuring extremely violent scenes. In the show, all players wear green sports uniforms resembling prison outfits, while their guards and executioners wear fuchsia jackets and black clothing adorned with a triangle, circle, or square, depending on rank.
According to AFP, accessories inspired by the series have been selling in large quantities at a store in Manhattan, New York, in recent days.
