A cautious calm prevails in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, following clashes between supporters of the Popular Mobilization Forces and security forces due to the loss of Iran's allies in the elections. The UN mission in Iraq expressed regret over the rise in violence and the injuries among protesters against the election results and security forces at the entrances to the Green Zone.
The UN mission called on all parties to exercise restraint and stop the violence during the protests. According to a security source quoted by AFP, a demonstrator was shot dead during the protests in Baghdad, without specifying whether security forces fired the shots. This comes as Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi held meetings with security leaders following clashes between protesters against the election results and security forces at the gates of the Green Zone. According to the Iraqi Ministry of Health, hospitals recorded more than 120 injuries, most of them among security forces.
