Iranian President Hassan Rouhani affirmed that his country would respond positively to the Biden administration's return to its commitments if it proves its credibility in doing so.
In discussing the new U.S. administration and its future dealings with the Iranian nuclear agreement, Rouhani was quoted by Russia Today saying, "Tehran hopes that those taking power in the White House will return to the law and international commitments," urging the new U.S. president to return to the nuclear agreement and the law and obligations, and to work on "erasing the effects of the Trump administration." He revealed that Iran "will follow a step-for-step policy, statement-for-statement, and implementation-for-implementation."
Rouhani added, "Today marks the end of the tyrannical and unjust Trump and his ominous administration," noting that "Trump was a foolish economic terrorist, and today is the last day of his political life." He expressed hope that the Biden administration would return to Security Council Resolution 2231 concerning the nuclear agreement and concluded, "Trump is dead, his political life is over, but the nuclear agreement remains alive, and he did not succeed in eliminating it."
It is noteworthy that the nuclear agreement was reached in July 2015 between Iran and the 5+1 group (the five permanent members of the UN Security Council - China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States - plus Germany) and the European Union. The United States withdrew from this agreement on May 8, 2018.
