Relief Authority Calls Upon Families of Port Explosion Martyrs to Submit Documents for Financial Aid

The National News Agency reported that the Relief Authority has called upon the families of the martyrs from the port explosion to submit their documents for financial assistance.

The Higher Relief Authority issued a reminder to citizens based on its previous statement: “According to Cabinet Decision No. 2020/1 dated 5/8/2020, particularly Article 12 thereof, the Authority will provide financial assistance to the families of the martyrs who fell in the port explosion on 4/8/2020. The families must approach the offices of the Higher Relief Authority located in the Starco building, carrying the following documents:

- A copy of the martyr’s identification or civil status document.

- A family civil status document with the deceased's name crossed out.

- An inheritance certificate for the deceased.

- A death certificate.

- A statement from the mayor indicating the cause of death.

- A certified copy of the Internal Security Forces investigation report or a statement from the military police.

- A statement from the hospital indicating the cause of death.

- A guardianship ruling in case of minors.

- A power of attorney from the heirs to one of them.

- All these documents must be certified as per the regulations.”

The Port of Beirut witnessed a massive explosion that occurred in two phases in Warehouse No. 12 on August 4, 2020, resulting in a huge smoke cloud resembling a mushroom cloud, accompanied by a shockwave that shook the capital, Beirut. This led to significant damage at the port and shattered glass facades of buildings and homes throughout most neighborhoods of the Lebanese capital. The Lebanese National Agency reported that the number of injured was large and uncountable, while the Lebanese Ministry of Health later recorded the death of over 204 people and the injury of more than 6,500 others. There was direct damage to about 50,000 housing units, with approximately 300,000 people becoming homeless. The Governor of Beirut estimated the material losses from the explosion to be between 10 to 15 billion US dollars.
