Sudanese authorities have arrested 9 members of Al-Qaeda who had previously entered the country to participate in training aimed at targeting the Gulf Arab states. In detail, the National Anti-Terrorism and State Crimes Prosecution, in collaboration with security and military intelligence agencies, detained the 9 terrorists in Khartoum.
A spokesperson for the National Anti-Terrorism Prosecution, Ahmed Suleiman Al-Awad, told Al-Arabiya/Al-Hadath that investigations were conducted by the security police (focused on state crimes and anti-terrorism) in coordination with the General Intelligence Service, and these individuals are accused in their home countries of committing and participating in terrorist offenses.
He explained that some had entered Sudan illegally to receive training targeting the Gulf region. He mentioned they belong to Al-Qaeda and hold various nationalities, with some of their names published on a United Nations Security Council list. Additionally, he noted that among them are individuals holding Syrian passports of Tunisian descent and Chadians, with one accused of planning an attack on foreign tourists in Sousse and wanted in Tunisia. It is worth mentioning that the regime of ousted President Omar al-Bashir had, over the past years, housed several terrorist leaders who found in the country a base for establishing some training camps.
