Qais Saied: We Are Not Advocates of Coups, But We Want the Law Applied

The Tunisian president, Qais Saied, confirmed on Wednesday that he is not an advocate of "coups," but calls for the law to be applied equally to everyone. Saied stated in remarks published by the Tunisian presidency that the "machinery of the state" is functioning normally, even though Tunisia is experiencing exceptional circumstances.

Earlier today, the leader of the Tunisian Ennahda Movement, Rached Ghannouchi, retracted his stance on President Qais Saied, announcing the movement's support for the Tunisian president. He said in media remarks, "We will support President Qais Saied and work to ensure his success, which requires readiness for sacrifices, in order to preserve the stability of the country and the continuation of democracy."

This represents a significant shift in Ghannouchi's position, who was among the most prominent opponents of these decisions. The Ennahda Movement had previously criticized President Saied and demanded that he reverse the decisions he made, which they claimed were "unconstitutional and represent a coup against the constitution."

It is noteworthy that President Qais Saied decided on July 25 to freeze all parliamentary powers for a month, strip its members of immunity, and dismiss the government led by Hisham Mechichi, while taking on the role of head of the executive authority and the public prosecutor, based on Article 80 of the constitution.
