Survivors of Congo Attack Return to Their Burned Village

Residents of the village of Mukondi in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo lost the remnants of their burned homes on Friday. They recounted how they fled for their lives while rebels were beheading people around them. Local authorities confirmed that members of the Allied Democratic Forces attacked Mukondi and a neighboring village on Wednesday night, leading to the burning of homes and the deaths of at least 39 people, with many others injured. Local leader Kasirika Diogratias near the ruins of a house in Mukondi stated, "They killed them with machetes and set fire to the houses. People are afraid to return."
