White House National Security spokesman John Kirby indicated on Friday that the United States has significant concerns that China may attempt to present itself as a peacemaker in the Ukraine war by calling for a ceasefire. Kirby stated in a briefing for reporters that any ceasefire at this stage would not lead to a fair and lasting peace between Ukraine and Russia. Earlier in the day, Kremlin foreign policy advisor Yuri Ushakov announced that Russian President Vladimir Putin would discuss the Ukraine conflict with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping during an official visit to Moscow in a few days, according to the Russian state news agency. Meanwhile, Britain urged China to encourage Russia to end the war in Ukraine, with a spokesperson for British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak emphasizing on Friday that Xi should use his visit to Moscow to encourage Putin to withdraw his forces from Ukraine.
