UN Envoy: Libyan Elections Possible This Year

The UN envoy to Libya, Abdullah Batili, stated today, Saturday, that if a clear roadmap and electoral laws are established by June, it is possible to hold general elections by the end of the year. Batili announced last month the necessity of creating a steering committee to enable the country to conduct elections, which are seen as essential for achieving any lasting peace.

In a press conference in Tripoli today, he stated that the two legislative bodies, the House of Representatives and the High Council of State, "agreed to form a joint committee of six members from each to draft electoral laws," adding that "there is no reason for any further delay."
