Mysterious Outbreak of Disease in Mexico

Officials in Durango state in northern Mexico have announced another death linked to a mysterious outbreak of meningitis, raising the total number of casualties from the disease to 35. Health authorities in the largely rural state have documented 79 cases of meningitis over the past few months. This illness is typically associated with painful inflammation of the brain and spinal cord and often occurs due to a virus, or in some cases as a result of bacteria or fungal infection. Authorities confirmed the first case of meningitis in Durango in late last year.
