Flights at Catania Airport have been suspended today, Sunday, after a volcanic eruption at the nearby Mount Etna, which resulted in volcanic ash falling on the airport runways. The 3,330-meter-high volcano can erupt unexpectedly several times a year, releasing lava and ash over the Mediterranean island. Its last major eruption occurred in 1992.
