Death of 5 Migrants Due to Boat Capsizing in the Aegean Sea

The Turkish Coast Guard announced in a statement that "five migrants died as a result of a boat sinking off the southwestern coast of the country." It mentioned that "11 people, including a child, were rescued and taken to Didim port to be handed over to paramedics." Meanwhile, the Greek Coast Guard reported that "Turkey notified them about those rescued from a partially submerged boat in its waters," adding that "five individuals were found alive on Pharmakonisi Island, roughly 19 kilometers off the coast of Didim." They indicated that "these individuals stated the total number of passengers on the boat was 31." Coast guards in both Turkey and Greece noted that "search and rescue operations are ongoing." Earlier in the day, the Italian Coast Guard rescued over a thousand migrants and brought them to the southern shore on Saturday after saving three boats struggling in the rough seas off the coast of Calabria.
