The Ukrainian Ministry of Agriculture projected today, Monday, that grain harvests in Ukraine for the current year will decline to 44.3 million tons, down from 53.1 million tons in 2022, due to reduced cultivated areas as a result of the Russian invasion. The ministry indicated that the harvests may include 16.6 million tons of wheat, 21.7 million tons of corn, and 4.8 million tons of barley. Ukraine is one of the major producers and exporters of grains and oilseeds, but its production and exports have declined after Russia occupied vast areas of its territory and closed key ports on the Black Sea in the second half of the last season. In 2022, Ukraine harvested 20.5 million tons of wheat, 25.6 million tons of corn, and 5.6 million tons of barley.
