The Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, stated that "Syria's return to the League during the upcoming summit in Saudi Arabia is very probable," noting that "the process should take place in phases."
In televised remarks on Wednesday, he pointed out that "Damascus's return to its vacant seat since 2011 begins with a meeting and discussions followed by consensus among member states. Subsequently, an invitation is extended to Syria. At that point, Syria can participate in any other ministerial meetings and return to all Arab League activities."
Aboul Gheit confirmed that "based on the activities, communications, follow-ups, and momentum he observes, Syria's return is a highly likely possibility." The next Arab summit is scheduled to be held in Riyadh on May 19 of this year.
Furthermore, the Arab League is likely to hold two meetings at the ministerial level next Sunday concerning Sudan and Syria.
