Finnish Defence Minister Antti Kaikkonen announced on Thursday that he does not wish to donate Hornet fighter jets to Ukraine despite Kyiv's request for such aircraft to assist in its fight against Russia. He stated, "In my view as the Minister of Defence of Finland, we need these fighters to secure our country." Finland is in the process of replacing its aging fleet of Hornet aircraft with F-35 fighters that it ordered in 2021, but the delivery of the first new aircraft will not occur for another two to three years.
