After the China-Russia Meeting: Kirby Sends a Message to China

John Kirby, the spokesperson for the National Security Council at the White House, addressed the Chinese President on Tuesday, stating that if China wants to play a constructive role in Ukraine, its President should urge Russia to end its invasion of Ukraine. He emphasized that the United States does not seek a ceasefire in Ukraine, as it would allow Russia to retain its territorial gains and enable Putin to regroup his forces. Kirby added that "a ceasefire at this time, freezing the lines in place, gives him the time and space he needs to try to re-equip with matériel and troops and make up for resource expenditures." The Chinese President and his Russian counterpart had made statements reflecting friendship between China and Russia and mutual criticisms of the West, with no signs of diplomatic rapprochement regarding Ukraine.
