Thailand celebrated National Elephant Day today, Monday, with tables filled with fruit and vegetables to honor the majestic animal that is a beloved symbol of the country. In 1998, Thailand declared March 13 as a day dedicated to the preservation of elephants. During the celebration for this day, Kambon Tansacha, the head of Nong Nooch Tropical Garden in Chonburi Province, stated that elephants are a source of national pride and a part of the country’s cultural and historical identity. He added, "We are now trying to preserve these domesticated elephants and provide them with food and shelter. If they are all released into the wild, they will not survive."
