A spokesperson for the New South Wales government in Australia stated on Saturday that "the decision not to illuminate the sails of the Sydney Opera House in celebration of King Charles's coronation is aimed at saving costs." The role of the monarchy is a contentious issue across Australia, where King Charles serves as head of state. Australia held a referendum in 1999 on becoming a republic, but 55 percent of voters rejected the idea; however, recent polls have shown varying levels of support for the monarchy. While many public and historic buildings, including the Parliament House in Canberra, will be lit up in royal purple on Saturday night to celebrate the coronation, the Sydney Opera House, which illuminated its lights last year to commemorate the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, will not be among them. The celebrations at Parliament House on Sunday are set to include a 21-gun salute from Australian army personnel in addition to a display by the Australian Air Force.
