1.1 Million People Fled from Ukraine to Germany

The German Federal Statistical Office announced that approximately 1.1 million people arrived in Germany from Ukraine in 2022, surpassing the influx of migrants from the Middle East between 2014 and 2016. The office noted that two-thirds of the migrants from Ukraine arrived in the first three months following the Russian invasion between March and May of last year. This data comes just days before the first anniversary of the invasion that began on February 24, which led to the displacement of millions of Ukrainians. It mentioned that excluding those who returned to Ukraine, the number of Ukrainian migrants in Germany reached 962,000 last year, which is more than the combined total of 834,000 who came from Syria, Afghanistan, and Iraq between 2014 and 2016. It added that this made Ukrainians, by October 2022, the second largest foreign community in Germany after Turks.
