A fire broke out in a small gold mine in southern Peru on Saturday morning, resulting in the deaths of 27 people. The government stated in a communication that a fault in one of the electrical circuits caused the fire. Local prosecutor Giovanni Matos said in a press briefing, "There are 27 fatalities, according to the Yanquehua Police Station." Peru is the largest gold producer in the world and the second-largest producer of copper. According to data from the Ministry of Energy and Mines, this incident is the deadliest single mining accident since 2000.
