Strike Ends: "Incomplete" Return of Official Contract Teachers

Strike Ends:

The active committee of contracted teachers in official basic education announced the end of the strike and a 70% return to school on Monday, March 13, 2023. While schools will open, there will be a shortage of educational staff as 30% of the teachers continue to strike.

The committee explained: "On March 10, the Minister of Education transferred a maximum amount of $100 to half of the teachers, which led to conflict among the teachers. Some fought for their rights and considered this amount insufficient, while feeling disappointed by the lack of commitment from teachers in certain areas. Thus, some decided to return with this payment as a reaction to those who returned empty-handed. However, 50% still refuse to return, leading to divisions even within the same school, putting permanent teachers in a position of being victims of conspiracy, negligence, despair, and vulnerability. We have concluded that the schools opening, with the majority of teachers returning, means that the strike from the minority will not create the necessary pressure. If that minority wishes to return, let it be. As of now, 30% of the teachers are maintaining their stance of not returning and continuing the strike until their rights are achieved, with some considering resignation."
