The Polish Prime Minister reversed a controversial initial decision to pay substantial bonuses to the national football team for their performance in the World Cup, amid inflation and economic difficulties facing the country. This is a surprising retraction from Mateusz Morawiecki, who previously stated that he believed the players deserved some kind of reward for advancing from their group, which is Poland's best result in the tournament in 36 years.
However, in light of the controversy surrounding high inflation, Morawiecki stated that "there will be no government funds" for the players' bonuses. He added that the lack of funding is among the problems hindering the development of football in Poland, noting that state funds will be allocated to address this issue.
In a meeting before the team’s departure to Qatar, Morawiecki promised the players "a very valuable prize" if things went well. Media reports indicated there was talk of at least 30 million zloty (6.7 million dollars), according to the Associated Press.
