Strong winds accompanying "Cyclone Freddy" have swept through Mozambique, resulting in one death, damage to rooftops, and the closure of a coastal town. This comes after at least 27 people were killed when the cyclone made landfall last month. Satellite data has shown that Freddy, one of the strongest storms ever recorded in the Southern Hemisphere, has settled offshore but continues to lash the coast with rain, likely only hours away from making landfall for the second time since it was named on February 6. The Mozambique Meteorological Institute predicted that the storm would reach land around midnight local time. After swirling for 34 consecutive days, Freddy is likely to be the longest-lasting tropical cyclone on record. According to the World Meteorological Organization, the previous record was held by a cyclone that lasted for 31 days in 1994.
