Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu announced that the death toll from the earthquakes that struck southern Turkey on February 6 has reached 34,556. In this context, the Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) indicated in a statement that 7,242 aftershocks have occurred since the initial quake, with 41 of them ranging between 5 and 6 on the Richter scale, along with 450 aftershocks between 4 and 5.
The statement mentioned that AFAD has been continuously transporting tents to the area since the first moment to meet the shelter needs of those affected by the earthquake, having set up approximately 300,809 tents in the affected provinces. It noted that it has established camps in 270 locations in the disaster-stricken areas.
On Monday, a 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck the "Defne" area of Hatay province in southern Turkey. AFAD previously reported 90 aftershocks, the strongest measuring 5.8, resulting in 6 deaths and injuring 294 others, including 18 in serious condition due to the earthquake. The Hatay earthquake comes two weeks after a double earthquake that hit Kahramanmaraş province in southern Turkey with magnitudes of 7.7 and 7.6, which significantly impacted northern Syria, causing substantial loss of life and property in both countries.
