Rafael Defense Systems announced today, Wednesday, the development of a new system for intercepting hypersonic missiles. The company's president, Yuval Steinitz, stated, "It will enable us to intercept all types of hypersonic threats, including ballistic missiles and hypersonic cruise missiles."
The company added that it has briefed the U.S. Department of Defense (Pentagon) on the development of the new system. The company declined to confirm whether the Israeli military could deploy Sky Sonic or when that might occur.
These missiles can travel at least five times the speed of sound and take complex trajectories, making them difficult to intercept.
