The International Court of Justice (ICJ) stated on Monday that the Netherlands and Canada have requested to prosecute Syria for allegations of torture. The court added in a statement: "The two countries claimed in their request that Syria has committed numerous violations of international law since at least 2011 and sought urgent measures to protect those at risk of torture."
The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated: "The Dutch government sees abundant evidence that Syria has committed serious human rights violations against Syrian citizens on a large scale."
Canada and the Netherlands urged the court to issue urgent orders to Syria, including measures to cease all acts of torture and cruel treatment, and to end arbitrary detentions. The international court is expected to hold emergency sessions to consider these requests within days of receiving the case.
