Khaled Balshi Elected as Head of Egyptian Journalists' Syndicate

Ahmad Mursi, the head of the judicial committee overseeing the elections for the Egyptian Journalists' Syndicate, announced the victory of Khaled Balshi, one of the prominent journalists known for their defense of press and publishing freedom, as the new head of the syndicate. Balshi received 2,450 votes compared to 2,211 votes for his main competitor, Khaled Miri, the editor-in-chief of the state-owned Al-Akhbar newspaper. The total number of votes cast in the election was 5,062, of which 4,888 were valid and 174 were invalid, according to the supervising committee. Balshi is the editor of the Darb electronic website, which was one of dozens of sites blocked in Egypt in 2020.
