Death of the Last Captive Killer Whale in Canada

The Ontario provincial government announced yesterday, Friday, that Kiska, the last captive killer whale living in Canada, has died. They added that Marineland amusement park, where Kiska was living, informed them of the incident. Brent Ross, a spokesperson for the Ontario Ministry of Public Safety, stated in an email, "Marineland notified the ministry of the passing of the female whale named Kiska at the park on March 9, 2023. An autopsy was performed on the deceased whale by specialists."

"Marineland" is an amusement park located in the Niagara Falls region of Ontario. Kiska was captured as a calf in Icelandic waters in 1979 and died at the age of approximately 47. Park officials noted that Kiska's health had deteriorated in recent weeks. Local media quoted park officials stating, "The marine mammal care team and experts did their utmost to provide comfort to Kiska and will mourn her loss." The organization "Animal Justice," a non-profit advocating for animal rights, called for an investigation into how Kiska was treated by the officials at "Marineland."
