The UAE authorities have detained up to 2,700 Afghan asylum seekers for more than 15 months without a legal way for them to obtain asylum or relocate. According to a report by Human Rights Watch, many of the Afghans detained in the UAE suffer from depression and other psychological conditions, are unable to access legal counsel, and there is a lack of educational services for their children. The office responsible for relocating Afghans at the U.S. State Department has stated that the U.S. commitment to resettling eligible Afghans, including those at the humanitarian facility in the UAE, is a "steadfast commitment."
