Joshua Mortoti, the President of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, announced on Friday that the country recorded a 32 percent increase in gold production last year, allowing it to regain its position as the leading gold producer in Africa. Ghana lost this position to South Africa in 2021 after a significant decline in its production. Its gold output rose to 3.7 million ounces in 2022 compared to 2.8 million ounces the previous year. Mortoti attributed the increase to the expansion of production in existing mines at an annual event.
