The Director of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, confirmed on Wednesday the existence of additional cases of the Marburg virus in Equatorial Guinea and urged the government to formally report them. He added, "The officially recorded number of cases remains nine, with seven deaths across three provinces. The fact that these three provinces are separated by 150 kilometers indicates a wider spread of the virus." Ghebreyesus noted that the WHO is aware of additional cases and pointed out that there is also an outbreak of the virus in Tanzania, where authorities reported eight infections in one area, including five deaths. The organization stated that the Marburg virus disease is a viral hemorrhagic fever with a mortality rate of up to 88%.
