Kenyan Police Fire Tear Gas to Disperse Protesters

Kenyan police fired dozens of tear gas canisters today, Friday, to disperse a crowd of thousands of opposition protesters attempting to breach the main commercial area in the capital to protest against tax hikes. Opposition leader Raila Odinga called on demonstrators to protest the tax increases, which have been imposed at a time when many are already struggling with rising prices of essential goods, such as maize flour. The High Court in Kenya ordered a suspension of the tax increases, but the government has already raised fuel prices, leading to a new legal challenge.
