The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) confirmed today, Wednesday, that "the upcoming edition of the Asian Cup will be held in Qatar between January 12 and February 10, 2024." China was awarded the hosting rights for the continental tournament, which occurs every four years, in 2019; however, it withdrew this year due to its strict efforts to combat the spread of the coronavirus. Qatar, which hosted the World Cup last year, won the hosting rights after competing with South Korea and Indonesia. The tournament's schedule was changed from mid-2023 to early 2024 to avoid the summer heat in the Gulf. Qatar has hosted the Asian Cup twice, in 1988 and 2011. The AFC noted that "the tournament will take place in eight stadiums, six of which were involved in hosting the World Cup finals won by Argentina."
