The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, called on Tunisia today to "stop restricting media freedoms and criminalizing independent journalism." Turk stated in a statement, "The campaign that began earlier this year against judges, politicians, labor leaders, business people, and civil society actors has now extended to target independent journalists, who are increasingly facing harassment and being prevented from doing their work." He urged Tunisia to change course, emphasizing that since July 2021, the UN Human Rights Office in Tunisia has documented 21 cases of alleged human rights violations against journalists.
