The Icelandic government has decided to allow U.S. nuclear submarines to make brief stops for resupply off its coasts "provided that these submarines do not carry nuclear weapons." A statement from the government noted that "the condition for the arrival of allied warships in the country is that the governments of the concerned countries understand and respect the provisions of Iceland's national security policy, by declaring its territorial waters free of nuclear weapons." It is worth mentioning that in recent years, the United States and Iceland have expanded cooperation in defense in the North Atlantic region.
