South Korea Imposes Sanctions on Two Individuals Involved with North Korea

The South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Wednesday the imposition of new sanctions on two individuals it claims are involved in North Korean weapons programs. The sanctions target Choi Chun-Joon, who was a South Korean citizen before obtaining Russian citizenship, as well as two companies he owns, and a North Korean citizen who assisted Choi.

Choi faces charges of facilitating illegal financial activities for North Korea in violation of United Nations Security Council sanctions after acquiring Russian citizenship. The ministry stated in a release, "This is the first time our government has imposed unilateral sanctions on an individual of Korean descent."
