The University of Tokyo invited Jack Ma, the founder of the Alibaba Group, to be a visiting professor at the Tokyo College, a new institution run by the university, on Monday.

The university noted that "the appointment period for the most famous entrepreneur in China ends at the end of October, but the contract is renewable on an annual basis."

Those at the college will have the opportunity to participate in areas such as advising on important research topics and delivering lectures on management and startups.

This comes after Jack Ma returned to China in March after spending more than a year abroad, a move that the private sector in the country sees as reflecting a return to calm in the sector following a strict two-year regulatory campaign. Tokyo College was established in 2019 to act as a bridge between the University of Tokyo and researchers and research institutions abroad.
