According to the Interfax news agency, an Armenian soldier was killed on Wednesday following shelling by Azerbaijani forces, marking the latest episode in a prolonged series of clashes between the two neighbors. Interfax reported that some shells struck the village of Sotk near the border. The agency noted that Azerbaijan denied the Armenian accusations, labeling them as "pure lies."
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev are scheduled to meet on June 1 during a development conference in Moldova. The two countries have fought two wars over the past 30 years related to the Nagorno-Karabakh region, which is located in Azerbaijan and is predominantly inhabited by Armenians. Both sides frequently exchange accusations of escalating attacks.
International mediation efforts to achieve a lasting peace have so far yielded no significant results.
