British Home Secretary Suella Braverman met with Rwandan Foreign Minister Vincent Biruta on Saturday and confirmed additional support for migrants being sent to Rwanda.
In a press conference, she stated: "Many countries are facing unprecedented numbers of illegal migrants," asserting that "this groundbreaking partnership is humanitarian, compassionate, fair, and balanced."
For his part, Biruta confirmed that "the proposals provide better opportunities for migrants and Rwandans alike and will help achieve the UK government's goal of dismantling human trafficking networks."
The British government aims to send tens of thousands of migrants to Rwanda as part of a $146 million agreement reached with Rwanda last year. However, no deportations have occurred as activists challenge the legality of this policy in the courts. UK government data indicates that over 45,000 people entered the UK last year in small boats from France, most of whom were young individuals from Albania, Afghanistan, Iran, and Iraq.
