South Korean and U.S. forces participated in live-fire drills today, Thursday, following North Korea's attempt last month to launch a spy satellite, which escalated tensions in the region. The office of South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol announced that "the drills, overseen by the president, are held in commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the alliance between the two countries and the 75th anniversary of the establishment of the South Korean Army." The office added that "the allied forces prepared a subsequent phase of the training program for a counterattack with airstrikes and precise artillery bombardment on key targets, aimed at completely eliminating military threats from North Korea."
