South African broadcasting authority reported today, Wednesday, that at least 24 people have died in an informal settlement near the Boksburg suburb of Johannesburg due to a suspected gas leak. The spokesperson for the Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management stated that the leak originated from a gas cylinder in one of the yards within the Angelo Squatter Camp. He added, "Currently, the death toll is 24," and several individuals have been hospitalized as search and rescue operations continue. It remains unclear if there were illegal miners among the victims, following local media reports suggesting that the incident might be linked to illegal mining activities.
