Post-Brexit: America and Ireland Discuss Trade Agreement

During a meeting at the White House, U.S. President Joe Biden and Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar expressed their support for the trade agreement between Britain and the European Union regarding post-Brexit trading rules. Biden emphasized that he "strongly and firmly supports the Windsor Framework," knowing that the Irish Prime Minister supports it as well. The two leaders spoke briefly to reporters at the start of their meeting in the Oval Office, with Biden reaffirming his continued support for the Good Friday Agreement, which largely ended political violence in Northern Ireland 25 years ago. Earlier this week, Biden stated that he "intends to visit the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland on the anniversary of the agreement next month." Biden mentioned that he spoke with British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who finalized the agreement known as the "Windsor Framework," during a meeting in California. Last month, London and Brussels reached an agreement aimed at resolving tensions arising from the Northern Ireland Protocol that established trading rules following Britain's exit from the EU.
