After Condemning North Korea, the US Fails to Issue a UN Security Council Resolution

The discussions within the United Nations Security Council regarding the US efforts to issue a resolution condemning North Korea's intercontinental ballistic missile launches have stalled after both China and Russia withdrew from the talks. Security Council members are reviewing a draft statement prepared by the United States, which calls for condemnation of North Korea's actions. This draft must be approved by all member states of the council.

The draft statement reads: "The Security Council expresses its deep concern over the escalation of tensions and strongly urges the Democratic People's Republic of Korea to cease launching intercontinental ballistic missiles, or any other ballistic missiles, or conducting nuclear tests." A UN diplomat mentioned that the United States "accepted amendments from all parties presented, while other council members objected to a few amendments that were not included and deemed them unacceptable."
