Sudanese Sovereignty Council President: We Will Build a Military that Does Not Intervene in Politics

The President of the Sudanese Sovereignty Council, General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, stated today, Sunday, that Sudan intends to build a military that does not interfere in politics. Al-Burhan said during a speech in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, "We want to build armed forces away from politics and participation in any internal actions unless requested by the government." He added, "We want to empower any upcoming civilian authority to have the armed forces under its command." Sudanese political factions agreed to form a new transitional government on April 11, according to Khalid Omar Youssef, spokesperson for the signatories of the political settlement earlier this month.
