Kenyan Interior Minister Kithure Kindiki announced that the death toll among members of a religious sect, who believed they would enter paradise by fasting, has risen to 89 individuals. Kindiki noted that three more people have been rescued, bringing the total number of survivors found so far to 34. He stated, "We pray to the Lord to help them overcome the trauma and aid in their recovery." The Kenyan Red Cross indicated that an office it established at a local hospital to search for the missing and provide counseling received reports of over 200 people missing.
