The Belgian public prosecutor's office reported that "Belgium has received Italian MEP Andrea Cozzolino (a legislator in the European Union) to be investigated in a bribery scandal, the largest for EU politics in decades." The prosecutor's office stated that "Cozzolino has been charged with corruption, organized crime, and money laundering," adding that "he was subsequently released under certain conditions pending further investigations." The scandal is based on suspicions that Qatar and Morocco bribed politicians and assistants in the parliament as well as non-governmental organizations to influence decision-making in the Council of the European Union. However, Cozzolino denies any wrongdoing.
