Today, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko stated that his country requires guarantees from Russia for defense in the event of an external attack. The report comes from the official Belarusian news agency BelTA.
Lukashenko met with Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu in Minsk, in an unscheduled visit, where they discussed the protection of Belarus. Earlier, Lukashenko discussed this issue with Russian President Vladimir Putin, who mentioned that they agreed such security guarantees were necessary and should be formalized.
Lukashenko noted that in general, during discussions with Putin, it seemed that in the case of aggression against Belarus, the Russian Federation would protect Belarus as its own territory, emphasizing that this is the type of security guarantee needed.
