Sale of the Oldest Bible Copy in the World for $38 Million

Sotheby's auction house announced the sale of the oldest and most complete Hebrew Bible in the world for $38.1 million on Wednesday, marking the highest price ever achieved for a book or document sold at auction. The winning bid was made through a donation from Alfred Moses, a former American ambassador and chairman of the American Jewish Committee, who presented the copy to a Jewish museum in Tel Aviv. The sale price was below Sotheby's estimated price of $50 million for the copy, which was projected in February.
